What are the chances of getting pregnant with IUI?

What is IUI treatment?

IUI stands for Intra-Uterine Insemination, which is a fertility treatment designed for women with unexplained infertility. It is the most common fertility procedure used in treating female infertility. This procedure involves placing sperm directly into the woman's uterus via the cervix, instead of taking the usual route of fertilizing an egg in a laboratory dish and then transferring it to her uterus.
The objective of this procedure is to increase the chances of pregnancy by placing sperm closer to where it is needed. The sperm must then fight its way through the cervix, up into the fallopian tubes and then onwards to meet with an egg that has been released by ovulating (egg release).

Who can undergo IUI Treatment?

IUI can be performed on women who are facing difficulty conceiving but have normal reproductive organs and no issues related to their hormones or fallopian tubes. Women who want to get pregnant may benefit from this treatment if they are having trouble getting pregnant with their own eggs. IUI may also be considered if a woman has blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, endometriosis or certain types of pelvic inflammatory disease. It may also be used when there are problems with ovulation or sperm production.

In an IUI treatment, a doctor inserts a small amount of sperm directly into the womb.
This is done either at home or at a clinic under ultrasound guidance. The woman lies on her back with her pelvis tilted forward and the doctor places the sperm next to her cervix. This is called intrauterine insemination (IUI).

It takes around 10 minutes, and you can go home as soon as it's done.
The treatment is usually painless and relatively straightforward, and most women find it easier to deal with than IVF. However, IUI can take time: several cycles may be needed before it works for any one couple.

It's unlikely to be covered by insurance unless you have been trying for a year or more without success.
